Advice to Second Year Students: As college students we like to think that we need to have everything figured out and that plans we've made previously must be followed exactly. But the truth is that these last years of "teenage-hood" and early years of our twenties aren't set in stone. Things are always going to be changing. So just be kind to yourself, find the good in everything, and make goals but don't punish yourself if it doesn't work out like you hoped. Things happen for a reason and at the end of the day it just makes the journey that much more interesting.

    Major/Minor Office Hours: Thursday, 10-11am (https://ucsd.zoom.us/j/7298195521)

Advice to Second Year Students: Don't be afraid to step into and embrace the unknown. There are so many things beyond our control as students and human beings. Giving ourselves grace and finding acceptance in the fact that so much of life is unpredictable helps free us from the stress and anxiety of constantly trying to gain control of everything in our lives. It is incredibly important and prudent to plan for our futures, but leaving the minutiae to chance is not all that bad.

    Major/Minor Office Hours: Wednesdays 11am- 12pm (Zoom ID: 930 4072 9945)

Advice to Second Year Students: Everyone's journey in college is different! Don't be afraid to take risks, try new things, attend that meeting for the club you're interested in, ask questions, and take advantage of all the resources on campus, because they are there to guide you along your path at UCSD. Always remember that you are a human being who is learning and growing, so don't be too hard on yourself! Find what works best for you when it comes to balance. We don't need to have everything figured out, and that's okay, because college is where you get to explore all these new opportunities and create memories you'll never forget!

Advice to Second Year Students: Take advantage of all the resources on campus and to put yourself out there. As a second-year, I fully immersed myself in campus life by exploring various opportunities and resources available, from academic support to extracurriculars. Doing my research into different on-campus offerings helped me discover valuable programs, connect with peers, and grow both academically and personally. Building these connections early on allowed me to not only gain new skills but also feel more integrated into the university community. Taking these steps can open doors to unexpected opportunities and help you make the most of your college experience.

    Hometown: Baldwin Park, CA

Advice to Second Year Students: Understand that you have so much knowledge, community wealth, power, beauty, and kindness within yourself and once you let fear not dictate your decisions towards applying to opportunities, everything will be more easier to align. Please make sure you create a support system for the rest of your undergraduate journey as you cannot do the good and heavy work alone. Don't let people intimidate or minimize your experiences, accomplishment, and the way you take up space, another person needs to hear your voice. Take care of yourself spiritually and mentally so when things crumble, you be able to find resilience, power, and beauty within loss. This is your first time experiencing higher education, life, and new discoveries, be easy on yourself.

Advice to Second Year Students: Looking back on my experience as a second year student at UCSD some advice that I would give incoming second year students is to know that the experiences that they will have and the hardships that they will go through are valid and a shared experience amongst their peers. Looking back I wish I would have taken advantage of living on campus as this is the last secured year for housing, I would have consistently participated in more clubs and I wish I would have gotten more involved on campus sooner. I questioned what I would do with the major I was pursuing and whether I was doing enough and that is okay.

Advice to Second Year Students: Treat this year of college as an exploration phase and to give yourself grace throughout the year! During your second year, you may feel as if you need to have everything figured out; however, the truth is that it can be a year where you take more challenging classes, join a new club you would have never thought about joining, or even enter a different major- all of which are completely normal! Allow yourself that space to explore different avenues and don't be afraid to try out new or different things. Sometimes these things may not go your way and that's ok! Give yourself that grace as you pick yourself back up and keep pushing forward. There are many people here to help you succeed so seek mentorship from others and always keep learning!

Having that support system to get you through the tough times will bring you hope to keep going for the better times. Go at life at your own pace, and try to have fun with the responsibilities you have.
