Our Mission
Language Arts Tutorial Services (LATS) is a program under OASIS, whose core values are education, social justice, unity, community, and empowerment. At LATS, we believe in carrying out these values by providing culturally-informed and supportive one-on-one writing tutoring, writing workshops, and other programming. Our goal is to empower students to become effective writers in college and beyond. We strive to equip students with the skills and strategies to not only become better writers and communicators, but that also honor their identities, thoughts, voices, and lived experiences.
In our tutoring...
we do not believe in prescribing fixes for writing. We believe writing is a process and that one-on-one tutoring is a collaborative act that enables students to effectively express their ideas in writing. We strive to facilitate conversations that will help students navigate the many choices when it comes to writing.
In our workshops and programming...
we aim to create a space that is inviting and affirming. Writing can be a lonely endeavor, so we strive to provide a sense of community that welcomes all—including but not limited to—linguistic diversity, neurodiversity, people with disabilities, and first-gen students. We believe in validating students’ lived experiences. We want to help students see the beauty and strength of their experiences and to give them agency to tell their stories confidently.
Writing Tutoring Appointments
LATS is available for in-person and online writing tutoring Monday-Thursday from 10:30am-6pm and Friday 10:30am-4:30pm. Make an appointment by clicking the link below to work with one of our 12 highly-trained writing facilitators. Our facilitators come from all the different colleges and from all different majors. They are trained to give you the tools to become more confident in your writing, whether it’s for a class or a writing project, such as a scholarship essay, personal statement, or research proposal. We’re here to provide supportive, non-judgmental guidance for all your writing concerns.
How to Make an Appointment
Starting in 2025-2026, students will have a new system to book writing appointments with LATS. TracCloud is the place for students to manage various student services, including advising and tutoring. Click on the “Make an Appointment” box, and follow this step-by-step guide to book appointments that fit your schedule.
TUTORING PRINCIPLES
- We believe writing is a means of expression, not just as scholars, but as individuals.
- We help students find their voices. We validate their thoughts and experiences, empower them, and give them tools to articulate what they’re thinking and feeling.
- We never judge writing. We strive to create a comfortable space for students to learn about and grow in their writing.
- We guide students to come to their own insights about their writing. We never tell students what to write or how to write it.
- We meet students where they’re at. We take into consideration what knowledge they already have and work with them to build off that existing knowledge.
- We believe in writing as a powerful tool to create community and transformation.

How will LATS help me with the writing assignment that I’m currently working on?

What should I bring with me if I am receiving tutoring for a writing assignment?
Make sure you upload the writing prompt to the appointment form on ucsandiego.mywconline.com when you schedule your appointment. Bringing a hard copy to the session might also be helpful. We can help with every step of the writing process, so even if you haven’t written anything and just want to brainstorm, just be sure to bring your notes from class.
Also, bring with you a collaborative attitude. LATS writing facilitators are trained NOT to give you the direct answer. They are trained to understand where you’re at in the writing process and give you appropriate and helpful tools to make writing feel more manageable. The goal is to make you feel more confident in your writing. Appointments are most successful when they are a conversation.
What foreign languages do you support?
We believe multilingualism is a strength. Check out our LATS Team page to find out what languages are spoken on our staff. You’ll also find proficiency levels next to each language that is listed.
