Advice to Second Year Students: Although it may seem intimidating at first, taking that first step out of our comfort zones plays a significant role in our growth as a person and student. Stepping out of your comfort zone may look different for everyone. It can be going to that first office hours, taking that more challenging course, joining a student organization, taking on leadership positions on campus, etc. Whatever it may be, having the courage to do so can contribute to our overall experiences in and out of the classroom!

Advice to Second Year Students: It is completely okay to have a path that has lots of curves and twists! College is about exploring your interests and, sometimes, some of our experiences end up changing our goals drastically. Since changes in classes, career goals, and relationships can be difficult to maneuver, remembering to allow yourself to process your emotions (and asking for help!) is crucial to easing your college experience. Also, remember to have fun! College experiences are unique to you and offer so much richness to your personal development! :)

Advice to Second Year Students: I would tell second year students that there is a plethora of experiences that they are about to face. It is easy to get caught up in it all, but looking for help is the first step. Through 2Excel I hope that we can guide students to reaching their full capability on how to handle academic hardship, social involvement, and much more.

Thurgood Marshall College, Structural Engineering Major | Chicanx Latinx Studies Minor

    Hometown: San Rafael, CA

Advice to Second Year Students: Make sure to not take too much on your plate because your own capacity can change and every week is different personally. Also, be sure to be soft with yourself because managing so much all at once is really hard and just existing and getting by is enough in and of itself. Try your best to make sure to have healthy boundaries when it comes to school and work because even it it is important it isn't everything and taking mental breaks when needed is going to prevent burnout. Be open to whatever might come and leave your life.

    Veronica Tucker (she/her)

    Third Year

Earl Waren College, Human Biology Major | Healthcare-Social Issues Minor

    Hometown: Concord, CA

Advice to Second Year Students: As college students we like to think that we need to have everything figured out and that plans we've made previously must be followed exactly. But the truth is that these last years of "teenage-hood" and early years of our twenties aren't set in stone. Things are always going to be changing. So just be kind to yourself, find the good in everything, and make goals but don't punish yourself if it doesn't work out like you hoped. Things happen for a reason and at the end of the day it just makes the journey that much more interesting.
