Language Arts Tutorial Services Program (LATS)

OASIS Language Arts Tutorial Services is located on the 3rd floor of Center Hall. We provide free individual tutoring sessions and workshops in the areas of writing, foreign languages, and study skills. Students are presented with the opportunity to receive individual support or to participate in larger group sessions. LATS tutoring services and workshops begin Week 2 of all academic quarters.

Target Audience

  • The Language Arts Tutorial Services program supports all undergraduate students at UCSD who are seeking tutorial services.
  • Our workshops are catered specifically towards DOC students as well as students taking Analytical Writing Program Courses.
  • Priority is given to students who are:
    • Summer Bridge and CASP students
    • First-generation college students
    • Students for whom English is not a first language

1-on-1 Appointments

Indidvidual Tutoring Services 

LATS offers 1-on-1 tutoring sessions in a wide range of disciplines, with an emphasis on the six college writing programs, AWP courses, and foreign languages. Individual tutoring is provided by knowledgable, well-trained tutors who specialize in their respective college writing program and disciplines. Tutors are avialble to assist you during your entire writing process.

How to Apply 

  1. Visit oasismatrix.ucsd.edu to apply.
  2. Log on using your Single Sign-on SSO. 
  3. Click on "Apply for Tutoring." 
  4. Fill out the form, and select an appointment time that fits your schedule. 

*Note 

•If you would like a 60-minute appointment for the same day, you must schedule the appointment by 7:59am; otherwise, you will only be able to see a tutor for 30minutes during drop in hours. Remember to bring your writing prompt and/or a hard copy of your writing assignment to each session. 

 

Drop-In

The primary focus of drop-in tutoring is to provide students with a resource that will help them improve their writing when time is not readily availble in their schedule. Tutors will provide writing support to students on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students must bring their writing prompt and/or a hardcopy of their writing assignment to each session. Each session is 30 minutes long. 

Drop-in tutoring availble Week 2-Week 10. Drop-in tutoring is not college, major, nor grammar specific.  If you need writing assistance in the previously mentioned subject areas, you must schedule an appointment via oasismatrix.ucsd.edu

AWP/DOC/MMW Workshop Services

Spring 2019

Weekly workshops are available for students who are enrolled in AWP, DOC, and/or MMW courses. These course specific workshops focus on the writing process in relation to their respective course objectives. Some areas of focus are, but not limited to: strengthening reading comprehension skills, improving text analysis skills, and further developing critical thinking and writing skills. 

  • Starting Week 1, students can apply for a writing workshop at oasismatrix.ucsd.edu
  • Maximum number of students per workshop: 15 
  • Workshops meet for 1 hour per week from weeks 2-10
  • Enrolled students must attend all sessions of their workshop
  • Students who miss more than 2 workshop sessions may be dropped so that students so that students on the waitlist can be added

Attendance Policy 

  • Once you have been enrolled in a workshop, mandatory weekly attendance is expected.
  • If you do not adhere to the attendance policy, you will be dropped from the workshop, and students on the waiting list may be added. 
  • Students will not be added to workshops after the 4th week of instruction.

  • Who is eligible to receive tutoring services from the Languages Arts Tutorial Services Program?

    • All UCSD undergraduate students are eligible to receive support from the Language Arts Tutorial Services Program.

  • What is the cost associated with receiving tutoring from LATS?

    • Tutoring is provided at no cost to all eligible students!

  • Do I have to be affiliated with the summer transition programs OASIS holds in order to receive tutoring from LATS?

    • No, you do not need to be affiliated with OASIS in any way to receive support. As long as you are a registered undergraduate student at UCSD, you are eligible to receive tutoring services here at LATS.

  • How will LATS help me with the writing assignment that I’m currently working on?

    • Our tutors can assist you through the entire writing process, from interpreting the prompt to polishing a final draft.

  • What should I bring with me if I am receiving tutoring for a writing assignment?

    • You are expected to bring a copy of the writing prompt, as well as a hard copy of your work (no laptop). Any other books or resources could also be helpful. No laptops.

  • What type of study skills workshops do you offer?

    • Right now we offer time management, goal setting, and reading comprehension workshops. We are expanding our workshops in the near future, so check us out on oasismatrix.ucsd.edu

  • What foreign languages do you support?

    • French and Spanish

  • Do I have to attend the AWP 1 or DOC 1 workshop I registered for every week, or can I simply attend when I need the academic support?
