How Many Students will be selected to participate in STEP? We expect to select 40-50 first-year freshmen and transfer students to participate in STEP 2009.
Is STEP Free? Yes, it's free! There is no monetary cost to you for the program or meals. However, we do expect your full participation in all aspects of STEP. We provide you with breakfast and lunch each day.
Does STEP provide housing? STEP is a non-residential program and we do not provide housing for students. If you are from out of town and cannot afford a hotel, we will do our best to help you find housing locally, including possibly arranging for you to stay with other students.
Can I bring my car? Is parking available during STEP? Yes. You can bring your car and park it in the designated parking areas for a parking fee. STEP does not assume responsibility or payment for parking violations. There is the possibility of STEP providing a limited amount of parking permits on a first come first serve basis.
Do I need my own health insurance? Yes. It is highly recommended that you have some type of health insurance during STEP. You will be in the program for a week, and although the chances are high that you will be in good health the entire time, the possibility exists that you may become sick or injured during that time. STEP cannot assume financial responsibility incurred by a major sickness or injury. Minor medical services can be addressed at the Student Health Center, and only during normal business hours. Therefore it is highly recommended that you acquire health insurance before STEP begins.
Do I need to have all my Immunization requirements met? Yes. You will not be able to register for classes until you take care of this requirement.
Do I have to attend STEP each day?
Yes. STEP is designed as a full participation transition program which will only benefit you if you spend a majority of your time with us. The only exceptions made will be for family emergencies, or health reasons. If you have any questions about this policy, apply to the program first, and if accepted then contact the STEP office at step@ucsd.edu with your inquiry.
How do I get accepted into STEP? Students will be selected based on the information they provide in the application as well as the essay responses given. Students need to meet federal TRiO eligibility requirements of first generation college status, low income and/or be a student with a disability. Other factors such as GPA, and Entry Level Writing Requirement test results will be considered.
Can I work or have other outside commitments during STEP? No. If you decide to participate in STEP, you must commit your time to the program. The STEP schedule is very full, and will not allow you enough time to work or have large outside commitments.
Can I have visitors during the program? No. Visitors are not allowed during the program. The program is only for one week from 10am-5pm, since this is a limited amount of time, we want to make sure you are benefitting from the entire program as much possible.
Where will STEP be held? STEP will be held on the UC San Diego campus.
If I participate in STEP, do I automatically get accepted into TRiO SSSP? Yes. STEP is a one week summer program. Once the academic year starts you will be a TRiO SSSP participant and will receive all OASIS and SSSP services for up to 6 years.
Can I participate in more than one of the transition programs? No. Spaces in OTP are limited compared to the number of incoming first-year students. As such, we try to serve as many students as possible. If you are offered the opportunity to participate in SB or STEP, you should! If for some reason you are not accepted to either SB or SSSP, and/or you cannot commit to their summer activities, then you may be considered for acceptance to ATP or TRiO SSSP.
I am still confused about he different transition programs. What are the main differences between them? Please review Programs at a Glance.
