Summer Bridge Program

WELCOME TO THE SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM!

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Academic Courses
(8 units)

All Summer Bridge students enroll in two credit bearing courses - Contemporary Issues I: The University in Society (4 units) and EDS 20: Introduction to Principles of Learning (4 units). The eight units of credit are elective units that will be applied to your total credits for graduation.

  • Contemporary Issues I (CI) addresses a number of important social issues, such as diversity, institutional racism, multiculturalism, affirmative action, and immigration that represent challenges to higher education in California. In addition to lectures, you will meet in small discussion and writing sections. These sections are designed to increase your understanding of the Contemporary Issues course material, develop your writing, communication, and critical thinking skills, and enable you to build social relationships with other students as you master new material together.

  • EDS 20 is a 4 unit survey course. You will survey topics of study from Math, Science and Engineering that are available to you at the University. In addition to lectures, you will meet in small sections. These sections are designed to strengthen your problem solving skills, which are necessary to excel at UCSD, and master techniques of working collaboratively with others, a strategy that is extremely valuable at UCSD.

Campus Resources
During Summer Bridge, you will meet UCSD staff who will help you become more familiar with and utilize important campus resources. The Academic Transition Counselors and tutors you work with during Summer Bridge will also be a great source of information and support throughout your college career.

Residential Life
All Summer Bridge students, including those who will be commuters in the fall, will live together in the residence hall all four weeks of Summer Bridge. This provides more opportunity to make new friends and study effectively. Although you may visit home occasionally during the program, you must spend each night on campus. Throughout the program, you will enjoy a cookout at the beach, a dance, cultural programs, and many other opportunities for recreation. In addition, you will have time to just relax and enjoy the campus with your new friends.

Cost
There is no monetary cost to you for your housing, fees, or meals*. This is a value of over $3,000 per student. However, we do expect your full participation in all aspects of the Summer Bridge Program.

*Must provide your own health insurance

Program Benefits and Responsibilities
Summer Bridge is a pre-college program that will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of strong peer networks as well as the support of professional staff and faculty. The program will also mentally prepare you for the transition you will face as you make your way from high school to college. Although Summer Bridge will provide you with many benefits, it is also designed to be challenging and rigorous. Therefore we expect a high level of engagement, responsibility, and attention given to any academic program offered at a top ranking institution such as UCSD.
