WELCOME TO THE SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM! We are very pleased that you have chosen to attend the University of California, San Diego! We are sure that you will experience great intellectual and personal development as you work toward graduation. As a new UCSD student from a selected high school, the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS) - UCSD’s campus learning center - offers you many opportunities for academic enrichment and growth. One of the many programs created for your academic excellence as a first-year student is the 2008 Summer Bridge Program. The cultural diversity of our Summer Bridge students provides a tremendous benefit to the UCSD community by contributing to a campus environment of intellectual diversity and excellence. Such an educational environment is critical to prepare all aspects of the campus community for an increasingly pluralistic society. Therefore, one of our major goals is to further develop the talents and proficiencies that Summer Bridge students bring to UCSD, which in turn maximizes their contribution to a diverse campus. If you participate in Summer Bridge, you will live on campus for four weeks, earn eight units of college credit, and develop a higher level of academic skills and abilities, all at no monetary cost to you. Summer Bridge will challenge you, and attending will give you more confidence, provide you with knowledge about the campus, and help you feel at home at UCSD. Many of the friendships you make through Summer Bridge will last throughout your college years and beyond. You will find that being a part of the OASIS family is an extremely rewarding experience that can seldom be duplicated! During the academic year, Summer Bridge students transition into the Academic Transition Program. (ATP). ATP aims to ensure that freshmen reach their academic potential and enjoy positive involvement on campus. ATP provides an individualized package of tutoring, mentoring, counseling, and networking for each student to ease the transition from high school to university life. Students are assigned an Academic Transition Counselor (ATC), a peer mentor, who will follow your progress throughout your year. In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in quarterly social events. In the years ahead, the OASIS staff will be there to help you excel in your studies at UCSD through tutoring and mentoring services. As a Summer Bridge student, you will participate in an OASIS Learning Community (OLC) weekly seminar each quarter of your first year. OLCs will provide you with a consistent small group of peers who you can collaborate with for study groups and other activities throughout the year. OLCs will also help you with tips and necessary tools to excel at UCSD. Please read the program details description of the 2008 Summer Bridge Program.
