Welcome to the Academic Transition Program!PROGRAM INFORMATION:
Benefits of Participating in the Academic
Transition Program
- Students are assigned an Academic Transition Counselor (ATC), a
peer mentor, who will follow their progress throughout the first
year. ATCs meet with their students three times a quarter to
facilitate ATP students’ adjustment to UCSD by assessing academic
need and making referrals to the tutoring offered by OASIS and the
services offered by other campus units. ATCs also facilitate
sociocultural adjustment through a focus on student peer networks,
encourage participation in developmental extracurricular activities,
and offer guidance with study skills. During these individual
meetings, ATCs can share their college experiences and insights, as
well as answer any questions about the UCSD experience.
- The OASIS Learning Community (OLC) seminars are designed to
examine the strategies through which first-year college students
acquire a network of support that contributes to their academic
success and sociocultural satisfaction. OLCs provide a consistent,
small group of freshman peers who students can collaborate with for
study groups and other activities throughout the year. OLCs will
also help students learn the necessary tools to excel at UCSD. OLCs
meet one hour per week throughout the first year. These weekly
seminars will give students the opportunity to connect with other
freshmen, discuss any transitional issues and concerns, and learn
about how to succeed at UCSD.
- ATP students will be given priority placement in OASIS
Math/Science and Language/Writing tutorial workshops, which have
earned national recognition for helping students excel in their
freshman courses. Many outstanding UCSD students use these workshops
in competitive courses to ensure that they earn the grades that will
get them into medical, law, or graduate school. Unlike other
campuses that charge for tutoring services, OASIS tutorial workshops
are FREE! As such, workshops fill up fast, and waitlists are not
uncommon.
- Referral to Academic Success Program (ASP): Priority given to
all OASIS Transition Program (ATP, SB, & SSSP) students for
textbook-lending and exam archives services.
- Fun, quarterly social events/outings.
How are students selected to apply and participate?
Our first priority is to work with students
who come from Quintiles 4-5 (bottom two-fifths) of high schools in
California. These are students that come from high schools that produce the
least amount of UC eligible students. Other criteria for selection
include first-generation college status, low-income status, GPA, SAT
scores, and Entry Level Writing Requirement/Subject A scores. Other
students are welcome to apply, but Quintile 4-5 students will be given
first priority. Unfortunately, due to limited resources, we are not able
to extend an invitation to every entering first year student that would
like to apply.
