Summer Positions Available POSITION DESCRIPTIONS Academic Transition Counselors During the academic year, Academic Transition Counselors are vital in providing their freshman students with one-to-one, individualized attention and support throughout their first year. ATCs meet 3-4 times a quarter with the students on their caseload working from 8-12 hours per week, continuing to play a critical role in the retention and development of Summer Bridge students at UCSD. In order to become an ATC, students must complete EDS 116, a four (4) unit course, including the Mentor Practicum, which is offered in the winter and spring quarter only. The EDS 116 lecture meets once weekly on Tuesdays from 12:30 pm – 1:50 pm, while the Practicum meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. You must fill out an application in order to participate in EDS 116. Spring quarter applications are currently available at the OASIS front desk. Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, February 17, 2009 for the Spring Quarter session of EDS 116. PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST BE A SOPHOMORE OR ABOVE TO TAKE THE MENTOR PRACTICUM. ATCs begin training during the last two weeks in July; however, housing will not be provided during the first week of training. ATCs will receive room during the last week of training, room and board during the month of Summer Bridge as well as a stipend. Peer Mentor for TRiO Student Support Services (SSSP)
SSSP Peer Mentors are assigned to help students with a variety of academic, social and personal concerns during the Summer STEP program as well as during the academic year. Every first-year student in the program is assigned to a mentor. Mentor will be able to assist the transition of first time UCSD students, serve as a resource for academic and campus information, and to be an overall advocate for students’ academic and social successes at UCSD. In order to become a TRiO SSSP Mentor, students must complete EDS 116, a four (4) unit course, including the Mentor Practicum. TRiO SSSP Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP) will be held August 9-15, 2009 and some training will be required beforehand. Please contact t Lillian Garcia, Director, Student Support Services Program, at 534-3761 or Eddie Paje at 534-6308 for more information Resource Counselors Resource Counselors are key team players in placing freshman students into one of many possible OASIS Learning Communities (OLCs). An OASIS Learning Community is a cohort of students who are taking similar classes and OASIS tutorial workshops together. OLCs are intended to provide students with a network of support during their first year as they transition from high school to the university. Each cohort will meet one hour per week in a seminar during the academic year. In the seminars, students have the opportunity to address any transitional issues/concerns, network and collaborate with peers for study groups, and also learn about helpful tips and the necessary tools to excel at UCSD. RCs work 20 hours per week during the months of July, August, and the early part of September. Some RCs who work during the summer may continue to work through the academic year as OLC Seminar Mentors. RCs will be paid at the hourly rate of $9.00. Applications for Resource Counselors will be available Contemporary Issues Discussion Facilitators For more information, contact Rosalinda Tovar, Assistant Coordinator, Language and Writing Program, at 822-3247. Contemporary Issues Writing Facilitators Under direction of professional staff, facilitators prepare detailed lesson plans and implement various collaborative learning activities in their groups. Facilitators will assess and responses in accordance with the philosophical and theoretical premises discussed during Summer Bridge training sessions. Facilitators may be asked to conduct one-to-one writing conferences with students, and to perform other instructional and administrative tasks as required. Writing Facilitators will work 15-20 hours per week, from approximately 10:45 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday-Friday. Facilitators will be paid at the hourly rate of $12.08for individual tutoring and preparation. Facilitators will be paid $14.48 per hour for group activities.
